Regents Scholars Program

Success Stories

Julian Reyes

Year: sophomore
Major:
civil engineering
Minor: German
Goal: "Go out there and build things."

When Julian Reyes received the Regents Scholarship, he wasn’t certain that he wanted to attend Washington State University. But when he and his family arrived for a fall visit, Julian was drawn to the small campus atmosphere and the changing seasons. Two and a half years later, he’s very glad to have made the decision to come to Pullman.

In high school, Julian loved mathematics; at WSU, Julian is applying his theoretical knowledge through civil and environmental engineering. One of his favorite classes is Mechanics and Materials with Dr. Rene Peterson—her hands-on teaching methods include using swimming pool “noodles” to demonstrate torsion and Slinkys to explain the forces of stress.

Julian is also a part of the nationally acclaimed WSU Honors College. Its smaller class sizes and the variety of courses combine to provide unparalleled academic breadth. Even though he is an engineering major, he enjoys the Honors art and literature classes. Last summer, in fact, Julian joined eight other WSU students on a two-week faculty-led trip to Spain to study the culture, art, and architecture. This summer, he will be completing a research internship in Germany.

Julian also plays saxophone in the Cougar Marching Band, is a member of the Honors Student Advisory Committee, and co-president of his residence hall government.

“The Regents Scholarship has allowed me to focus on my studies and to enjoy the college experience to the fullest by participating in things like the Cougar Marching Band and my residence hall government.”
