How two schools made successful Regents Scholar nominations.
Each school and Native American tribe may approach the nomination process differently. The following two schools nominated students who won Distinguished Regents Scholar awards, each using its own unique approach.
Essays are the first step for Yakima's East Valley High School winner
“Who are you?” is one question the school asks students to address in their essays, and the other is “What are your goals?”
All the school's best students are invited to write these essays, which help East Valley's Principal Hummel to judge the seriousness of their interest in college and how they’ve prepared themselves to do well.
In making his nomination selections, Principal Hummel narrows the competition to the top 15 or 20 students based on GPA and course preparation. From among this group, the two students with the strongest combination of GPA and essay are selected for nomination.
The WSU Regents Scholar selection committee awarded one of East Valley High's nominees a Distinguished Regents Scholarship.

Walla Walla High School earns a perfect score
Beginning with students whose GPAs are in the top 10% of the junior class, Counselor Jeanne Ruecker explains the Regents Scholars program and urges students to complete their SAT tests by spring of the junior year.
Then a staff committee reviews qualifications and chooses two nominees.
Aware of the significance of the recommendation letter, Counselor Ruecker advises students to carefully choose the writers of their recommendations. For example, the writer of one student's recommendation included his involvement in community and extracurricular activities as well as his academic achievements.
Using this process, Walla Walla nominates strong students every year; many of them have won Distinguished Regents Scholarships.
