Andrea Mendoza

Year: senior
Double Major: psychology and English
Goal: graduate school

For Andrea Mendoza, the past four years have been filled with not only the rigors of earning a dual degree but also with opportunities for personal growth, community service, research experience, and meeting “amazing people who have truly touched my life.”

Andrea enjoys delving into the social sciences and understanding more about how people think and behave. For the past year and a half, she has been a research assistant on a project that is investigating the relationship between stressful life events and depression. She finds English a complementary discipline: psychology is a direct analysis of people while literature gives her a chance to analyze authors, their intentions, and the era in which they wrote.

Her Global Civilizations course explored the development of modern Latin American culture and how its multicultural roots are reflected in current music, literature, and film. It broadened her understanding of her own Mexican heritage and gave her a chance to share her personal perspectives with other students.

Outside of class, Andrea is president of the Catholic Newman Association chapter at WSU, secretary for Psi Chi honors society, and also volunteers for many other organizations.

“The scholarship played a very important role in my decision to attend Washington State University. I’m really glad that I did. I can’t imagine having a better undergraduate experience.”
