Quynh Le
Year: junior
Major: biochemistry
Minor: biology, mathematics, business
Goal: orthopedic surgeon
For Quynh Le, breaking her leg during karate practice may have set her life’s course. She was already planning on a medical career, but the first-hand experience of recovering from a broken tibia brought her goal into focus. After graduation next year, Quynh plans to become an orthopedic surgeon. “I believe that being a doctor is the most effective and quickest way to help others.”
Her favorite class, so far, was Human Anatomy 315. This unique course incorporates chemistry, biology, and how the body works, with hands-on study in a cadaver lab—an experience that students at most schools can’t get until they reach graduate school. The WSU College of Sciences' cadaver lab is one of only two in the Northwest and is the only one that allows undergraduates to participate. Quynh is now a student assistant in the lab, helping to prepare materials and guiding other students through their weekly assignments.
She has been involved in research since her freshman year: working on computational biology models and synthesizing DNA.
Outside of class, Quynh volunteers at the Pullman Regional Hospital, drives one day a week for the WSU Women’s Transit service, and is the social chair for the chemistry club.
Pullman continues to amaze Quynh with its supportive community and friendly atmosphere. “WSU is like my second home—there’s no other place I’d rather be.”
“I’ve had many academic and leadership experiences at WSU, such as participating in research work as a freshman in preparation for my Honors Thesis and becoming vice president of the neuroscience club. The University is large enough to make every day interesting but small enough that it feels like my second home.”
Life is good at WSU.
