How the Regents Scholars program works
The University automatically considers all eligible entering freshmen for Regents Scholarships (more about eligibility). As students submit their admission and scholarship applications, the Regents Scholarship Committee considers the most outstanding students as Regents Scholarship candidates.
To be considered for a Regents Scholarship, students need to:
- Meet the Washington state residency or Native American tribal affiliation criteria; and
- Complete the freshman admission and scholarship applications by the University's priority deadline.
However, the number of scholarships is limited, which means that to receive one, a student has to stand out among other outstanding students.
There are a few things that students can do—and that educators can do for their students—to ensure full consideration for WSU Regents Scholarships.
For students
To help yourself stand out from the crowd and increase your chance of winning a Regents Scholarship, ask a teacher, a counselor, your principal, or a tribal council representative to submit a recommendation on your behalf.
Choose someone who knows your academic achievements, community/cultural involvement, and college potential well.
Recommendations are not required. However, they give the scholarship committee more information about you—important details that will help them in deciding which students have the highest potential to succeed academically and in the student community at WSU.
Complete the WSU admission and scholarship applications as early as possible.
For educators and tribal leaders
If you have a particularly outstanding student (or several) who you think will be a strong candidate for the award, recommend your students to the scholarship committee by completing the recommendation form on this website.
Recommendations are not required. However, a recommendation gives your student two key advantages:
- It marks your student as a Regents Scholarship candidate.
- It gives the scholarship committee additional insight into your student's achievements, abilities, and potential.
You are welcome to recommend as many students as you like.
We urge you to recommend your best students, regardless of their level of interest in Washington State University; many current Regents Scholars didn't consider WSU until their school nominated them for the scholarship. Give them the chance. (Be sure to let your students know you've recommended them so they can complete the admission and scholarship applications.)

The selection process
To be considered for Regents Scholarships, students must complete the WSU admission and scholarship applications by January 31. Recommendations are also due on this date.
The selection process begins in October and continues until the January deadline. For best consideration, educators should send recommendations in as early as possible, and students should complete their applications as early as possible.
Students who have been selected for a Regents Scholarship will receive notification from the WSU Office of Scholarship Services.
