Changes to the WSU Regents Scholars Program
I want to let you know about significant changes in the Washington
State University Regents Scholars Program for the 2010-11 academic year.
With the ever-challenging economic environment in mind, we are implementing changes to make the Regents Scholarships more inclusive, to provide longer-term financial support to undergraduates, and to streamline the recommendation process.
There are six changes to the program:
- All new Regents scholarships will be awarded for four years, doubling the length of most of the current awards.
- WSU will select Regents award recipients from recommendations made by high school representatives including principals, guidance counselors, teachers, and tribal chairs. While these recommendations will be a major factor in selection decisions, recommendations will not guarantee the student's selection.
- Recommendations do not require a GPA or test score minimum, but high academic achievement remains a major factor in the awarding process. It is expected that most students selected will have earned at least a 3.8 unweighted GPA after six terms.
- Recommended students will be reviewed for both their academic achievements and their record of community, civic, and/or co-curricular involvement.
- The timeline for recommendations and selection will be aligned with the student's senior year. Recommendation forms will be available online, beginning in September. At that time, if you wish to recommend a student, you need only to complete and submit that form by January 31. You will need to complete a form for each student you recommend.
- Students may also be considered for this scholarship without a recommendation by completing the WSU Scholarship Application and Admissions Application by January 31.
We trust that these important changes will ease the process for students and their schools, and open up longer-term opportunities for a larger pool of talented students in need.
Details on the scholarships, the recommendation process, and general program criteria will be coming shortly. Information will be published on this Web site as soon as it becomes available.
Sincerely,
John Fraire
